Nestled deep within the untamed wilderness of the Tongass and Chugach National Forests in Alaska lie nearly 200 U.S. Forest Service cabins. With a history stretching back over a century, these cabins were originally built to provide safe and dry places for people to stay while hunting, fishing, and enjoying the national forests.
Today they serve as recreational getaways managed by the Forest Service, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves among towering mountains, shimmering glaciers, and the captivating dance of the Northern Lights.
However, years of use and exposure to Alaska’s harsh climate have taken a toll on a number of the existing Forest Service cabins, many of which require repairs and renovations. Moreover, the surge in recreational interest in Southeast and Southcentral Alaska has far exceeded the availability of cabins.
To address these challenges, the National Forest Service and the National Forest Foundation joined forces and created the Alaskan Cabins Project. This initiative aims to repair and renovate the historic structures while also building brand-new cabins, ensuring safety, comfort, and sustainability for future generations of nature enthusiasts.

Beyond providing a sanctuary for travelers, the Alaskan Cabins Project carries a deeper purpose.
